Biorefining: Paperzyme B.

Traditionally in the paper industry, mechanical refining is used as a process that involves the action of discs with particular designs, according to the type of fiber to be processed. These discs move among themselves, with the objective of improving the strength properties of the paper. However, this action, when the substrate involves secondary fibers, generates degradation and a significant increase of fines in the process.

In that order of ideas, a disadvantage of refining is the high energy consumption that normally ranges from 150 to 500 kWh, which would be 30% to 50% of the total energy consumed in the paper mills.

Now, biorefining is a pre-treatment in which enzymes are used to enhance fiber interweaving, thus improving strength properties and reducing energy consumption. Undoubtedly, this allows for a decrease in the costs of the refining process, resulting in good paper quality and a more environmentally friendly impact.

At Colarquim, we have the product Paperzyme B, designed with selective enzymes for excellent biorefining. This product has shown very positive results in the packaging and tissue industries.

Here are some of its advantages:

  • Excellent option to reduce energy costs.
  • Increases the strength properties of the paper, acting as a dry strength increasing agent.
  • It allows a better interlacing of fibers by a more homogeneous fibrillation.
  • It allows higher freeness values (or lower SR°) to be obtained with the same resistance properties, reducing energy consumption in refining.
  • There is less damage to the fibers and less generation of fines, which allows for increased pulp drainage.
  • The increase in strength properties obtained can be as much as 20% to 30%.
  • The gain in drainage can easily reach 10% or even 15% by increasing the speed of the machine.

En adición a lo expuesto anteriormente, Paperzyme B cumple con los requerimientos de la FDA, BfR, Mercosur y ANVISA RDC 88 y 90.

Finally, the recommended dosage is 60 to 150 g/ton, applied at a point prior to refining that guarantees a residence time of 30 to 40 minutes, in order to achieve better results.
